Jalan C.Y. Choy, Penang

Jalan C.Y. Choy was known as Bridge Street before the 1980’s. It’s a major road which links George Town to Jelutong and to the other side of Penang Island on the southern part. Google lah if you don’t get it.

According to Penang-Traveltips (http://www.penang-traveltips.com/bridge-street.htm) Bridge Street was renamed Jalan C.Y. Choy in the early 1980's, in memory of the 3rd mayor of George Town. C.Y. Choy (1907-1980) was the founding member of the Penang Discussion Group. He won the City Council Elections in the Sungei Pinang Ward with a high majority. Mr Choy served as mayor from 1964 to 1966, and is often nicknamed the "Quiet Mayor of George Town" due to his low profile.

This road is also where you’ll find the locally popular Jalan Magazine (Thau Tiao Lor), Lebuh Noordin (Jee Tiao Lor), Lebuh Presgrave (Sna Tiao Lor), Lebuh Tye Sin (Si Tiao Lor), Lebuh Macallum (Goh Tiao Lor), Lebuh Katz (Lak Taio Lor) and Lebuh Cecil (Chit Tiao Lor).

Anyway the temple in this photo is Seng Ong Beow, which the residing deity is Seng Ong Kong.

To know more about Seng Ong Beow or the streets in George Town, I would recommend you to check out this website http://www.penang-traveltips.com/ =p

full moon in Kampar

Full moon blossomed last night and can be seen in Kampar. The moon was exactly on top of 'Ku Miao' in Old Town. It was also the 15th day of the Chinese lunar calender where the moon is in its fullest. Fews day ago on Sunday night, the public were all abuzz over lunar halo, a big ring of light that appeared around the moon.

Campbell Street Market, Penang (panorama)

Campbell Street Market at night. This market is one of the earliest markets in the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. Although many George Town people have moved out and the youngsters prefer to go to the malls to buy raw food, this market is still as crowded as it used to be. Penangites still choose this old market besides than the nearby Chowrasta Market. This market which was built in around 1900 does not only served as a market but also as a melting pot of the multi-culturalism and symbol of unity and harmony in Penang. It's a good thing that it's being preserved and it should remain that way. Heritage and development can co-exist.

This market is also known as 'Sin Keh' in the local Hokkien dialect.

Falling Asleep

This old man fell asleep while having his morning sip of coffee in Old Town. What i'm attracted to was when he started to mumbling in his sleep. As Kampar has turned into an education hub with the set up of KTAR and UTAR, it still remains as the haven for the old people. While the youngsters go to the big city to make a living, the old ones stay on. You can see them on their old bicycles, spending time at the parks and kopitiams, chatting with friends, and raising their hands to people to acknowledge friendship. During the weekends, Kampar will be so crowded with tourists coming in to buy the local products. For the city people, this small town becomes their escapade from the hustle bustle of life with the pollution and traffic jam eveywhere. Kampar is so laid back and peaceful, it should remain that way.

Yan Keng Benevolent Dramatic Association, Kuala Lumpur

Date: 16/8/2011

Time: 6.32pm

Venue: Yan Keng Benevolent Dramatic Association, No. 51, Jalan Sultan, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This building is actually at the corner of Jalan Hang Jebat and Jalan Sultan. The entrance is from both sides.

There are few shops in the building such as tailor shop and chinese bookstore. On the second floor, there's a budget hostel for backpackers.

If Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) continues with its plan to demolish houses along Jalan Sultan for its MRT Project, this building will have to make way for it.

I wana thank Ai Loon for telling me that this is the oldest building along Jalan Sultan. If not, i won't pay notice to it.

True enough, Yan Keng Benevolent Dramatic Association was founded in 1920. It's 101-year old already.

According to Badan Warisan Malaysia, it is one of the oldest Chinese opera clubs in Kuala Lumpur. It raises money for charity by performances of Chinese opera and choral singing. The money is mainly donated to the old folks' homes, hospitals and schools. As membership decreased, part of the premises is now sublet for extra revenue. The tall parapet wall, facing Jalan Hang Jebat, with the name of the Association on it, replaces the original balustrades typical of the period. Beautiful classical arches line the five-foot way.

There are so much stories to tell from the building alone. What more along Jalan Sultan and the houses here. Put aside heritage, put aside history, what about the residents here, what about the businesses here?

We are losing heritage over development.

Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Date: 16/8/2011

Time: 5.50pm

Venue: Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I'm glad i made it to Jalan Sultan today. It's my off day and for the first time i went out just to take pictures. It's so hard to take panorama shots in Kuala Lumpur. The cars and the people just won't stop moving. aduih.. I stood there to get this shot for about 15 minutes. I stood still at one point with my tripod ok. I couldn't move my camera, if not the angle sure lari. Everyone were like staring at me..

Anyway, we might not have the chance to see this view again in the future. Jalan Sultan is just next to Petaling Street. The entire stretch of the century old shophouses in this Chinese community enclave will be demolished to make way for underground LRT project at the end of the year.

It's such a sad thing when history and living heritage is being wipe out from our eyes.

The residents are against the project but i find it hard for them to fight the case. They will be compensated. Let's see whether the buildings and the landscape here can be preserved for the generations to come.

I'm sad heritage buildings will be demolished.

I don't wish to see a concrete jungle in Malaysia.

Don't sacrifice so many people's livinghood, heritage, living culture, history, identity and sense of belonging in the name of rapid development. All these elements can work together..

Campbell Street

6.14pm 13/10/2010

Campbell Street, Penang : It's also known as the Chinatown as it is populated with the Chinese once upon a time. This is one of the streets in Penang where shophouses from different eras can still be found. You can still see a lot of old Chinese people surviving with old trades such as the Chinese pharmacy, Rolex shop, wet market, antiques shop, gold shop, textile shop and so on. The whole George Town area including this street used to be very lively before the repeal of Rent Control Act in year 2000. Now, it has become a quite street. Many tenants have moved out. The shophouse only open in the day time for business. At night, you can see some sex workers making their lives here. If no action to be taken to revive this heritage street, we can never see, learn and experience the beauty from the past. To live in a modern world, we don't necessarily have to destroy the past. Modernisation and heritage can be blend together.

UTAR new buildings

29/9/2010 9.41am View from Block C Cafeteria, UTAR, Kampar, Perak.

New buildings are being build at the green lungs of UTAR, Kampar Campus. It can be seen from Block C Cafeteria which is just opposite the construction site, separated by the lake. There will be two entrances to the new site which are from the Sports Complex and Block H. Due to the construction, the habitats of the animals are destroyed. Birds are flying away, buffaloes and cows can no longer stay there. The development also caused the lake nearby to be polluted. Soon, the nice view of the greens and clear blue skies will no longer available. More students are expected to enroll here once the completion of the expension project. Kampar town will then be more vibrant, alive but also high in population, crowded, polluted and not that green and nostalgic anymore.

1Malaysia ah??

We are Malaysian: An Indian barber is giving a new Raya hair cut to a Malay customer in his old shop at the slow and old town of Temoh, Perak. When many of the youngster don't even know or don't even care about the country and the meaning of independence, we can see this Malaysian Indian flying up Malaysia flag in his shop.

Those who ask what else the Chinese want or those who call the Indians and Chinese are immigrants or outsiders, they should really think twice. Treat others as you would like to be treated. We are all Malaysians. All of us carrying Malaysian IC and registered with the National Registration Department are Malaysians. We and our fathers, our forefathers have been and will still contribute to the development of this country because this is Malaysian, a land for us, the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, Sikh, Dayak, Kadazan, Dusun, Eurasian, mixed parentage and many more ethnics on this land.

So can this photo be 1Malaysia? This is 1Malaysia for me. It's fine if there's no such thing as 1Malaysia because we have already been doing this for the past half a century. More racial tensions after the concept was introduced. Then are we still 1Malaysia??

We are Malaysians in a country called Malaysia with or without 1Malaysia. Those talking about 1Malaysia are the one who are not practicing it because they just have to convince people to accept them for their own political interest. The normal rakyat are not doing the talking but they are doing the action. The grassroat rakyat are united. Only those with power, those who wish to be popular, those who can control the media and those who wish to be jatuh kampung, try to separate the rakyat and then they talk about 1Malaysia. Why?? To show that they care but they are the one who dividing us.

Racism comes when we feel we are superior than the rest. Don't forget that we are all the same.

If you love the nation, show your love. Don't talk only no action.

I am the owner of this country too..

The spectators who are mainly KTAR and UTAR students came as early as 12am to booked the seats. After 30 minutes extra time, Spain’s Andres Iniesta secured a dramatic goal at the last four minutes (116th minute) before the game ends. Spain lifted the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever in their glorious 1-0 victory over Netherlands.
